Telesur Key Projects

Telesur National Broadband ProjectSEOGS_Telesur_TNBP_1JUN2022
On 30 October 2021 it will be 26 years ago that Suriname, via Telesur, was connected to the internet through a dial up connection, better known as Dial up. In order to be able to realize the e-Suriname vision, the outdated telecommunications network had to be adapted and expanded. This was the very ambitious Telesur National Broadband Project (TNBP), which started in June 2017. This project has been Telesur's largest investment to date and the costs amounted to USD 115 million. This amount was partly self-financed and partly obtained from a loan of the Surinamese government at the Bank of China. The project consisted of replacing and expanding the existing copper network with fiber optic. The design of the network was adapted in such a way that the existing customers on the copper network could still receive higher bandwidths. For this purpose, 253 MSAN-cabinets have been placed in the network. In order to be able to carry out the project at an accelerated pace, the choice was made to install the fiber optic infrastructure above ground.

Suriname-Guyana Submarine Cable SystemSEOGS_OIL.00_03_45_08.Still 001_17JUN2022
To meet the growing demand for bandwidth, the Suriname-Guyana Submarine Cable System (SG-SCS) was put into use in 2010. This project cost USD 54 million and was carried out in collaboration with the Guyanese GT&T. This fiber optic connection joins Suriname via Trinidad with the worldwide web (www). Formerly, the internet in Suriname was provided via satellite connection and via the Americas II international fiber optic connection, which was completed in 2000. These two international connections made it possible to meet the ever-growing need for internet.

5G Technology5G_DEC2019
Technological developments follow each other in rapid succession. After one generation of technology has been implemented, the next is already knocking at the door. Not long after expanding our 4G network for mobile broadband, we launched a 5G network on 25 November 2019, as the first country in the region. This took place while we were preparing for the developments surrounding the Internet of Things (IoT), in which all kinds of smart devices communicate independently with each other via the internet. With all the new unprecedented economic opportunities that this entails. With the launch of 5G Telesur was no longer a trend follower but a leader in the Caribbean. 5G also makes 'smart city' possible. By investing in this technology, Telesur ensures that Suriname is equipped with the technological options to be able to respond directly to the rapidly changing need of the market.

Environment
The environment also deserves special attention. Within this framework, Telesur has an agreement with Conservation International Suriname and can can consider itself as one of the Friends of Green Suriname. There is also an agreement with Suriname Conservation Foundation and support has been given in setting up the Master of Science program Education and Research in Sustainable Management of Natural Resources at Anton de Kom University.

Education
The Anton de Kom University was provided with a free 100/100Mb fiber optic connection. The PC's for Schools project, in which 763 computers were donated to several schools was also. In addition, 6 months of free internet were also donated per school. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Telesur - despite the economic challenges - has provided the community with extra support. For the purpose of education, the Social Internet Package was included in the product range and Free Data was launched.
The latter service gives students as well as teachers to opportunity to visit selected sites via their mobile or tablet, without being charged. There is also cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture to provide all schools with internet.

Healthcare
Over the years, various donations have been made to the benefit of health care. For example, hospitals have been supported with the purchase of medical equipment and renovation. During the pandemic, supporting health care has been a top priority. Among other things, means of telecommunications (smart devices) and facilities (call center service on behalf of 178, free calling for contact tracers and doctors and internet for ICU and quarantine-locations) are offered free of charge to the National Coordination Center for Disaster Management, the Bureau for Public Health Office and the hospitals. Financial support was also provided in some cases. In addition, some frontliners were commemorated with a gift as a token of appreciation around the new year 2020.

Caribbean Association of National Telecommunications Organizations
Shortened CANTO, founded in 1985, is the regional non-profit organization of telecom operators and companies in the ICT sector. The focus of CANTO is to promote the interests of the companies in the ICT sector in the region. In 1993, Telesur was given the chair of CANTO for the first time for a period of two years. This was also the case in 1995 and 2011.

In 2008 and 2011, Telesur hosted the Annual General Meeting and the Annual Conference and Trade Exhibition in Suriname respectively. Currently, the present CEO of Telesur, Mike Antonius, holds the position of Vice President of CANTO.
